Entrepreneurship and innovation are the two foundations on which the international network for Bamboo and Rattan has built its efforts in sustainable livelihood and economic development in Asia. INBAR, an international NGO based in Beijing, is building environmentally friendly social enterprises particularly in rural areas while providing effective conservation of the environment and of biodiversity.

For example, in Sichuan, Hunan and Yunnan in China, where the demand for bamboo has sharply increased, INBAR works with local communities to make sure that the natural bamboo forests are managed in a sustainable and biodiversity friendly way, as part of a green economy. In Ethiopia and Ghana in Africa, where firewood and charcoal are used widely for cooking and heating, but also causing rampant deforestation, INBAR works with local communities to develop charcoal made of renewable bamboo, to save the forests.

INBAR’s work, in particular the two projects in Sichuan and Africa, will be introduced by Dr J. Coosje Hoogendoorn. She is the Director General of INBAR, and a Dutch national. Before joining INBAR she has worked on biodiversity protection and rural development in countries such as Mexico, UK, the Netherlands and Italy.
